Your oral hygiene is an important factor to your health as well as the length of your treatment time and overall dental health. Remember, healthy teeth move faster than unhealthy teeth. Please read the following facts and recommendations:
- Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, in the morning and before bed. You will also want to brush your teeth after every meal.
- Use a soft bristle brush. Some patients prefer an electric toothbrush and have been pleased with the results. We all recommend using a Water-Pic® before brushing to help dislodge food particles that are caught in the braces and to stimulate the gum tissue.
- Always start brushing from the upper left and work your way around to the upper right, and the then the lower right to the lower left. This pattern will ensure you reach every tooth and surrounding gum tissue. Place the bristles on the tooth between the bracket and the gum. Gently massage this area to avoid puffy tissue and cavities. After cleaning the teeth, gently place the bristles between the bracket and the wire to clean the area between the wire and the teeth. Remember to brush the chewing surface and the tongue side of the teeth as well. This will help deter plaque.
- Flossing will allow you to remove plaque that accumulates between your teeth. It requires your attention and is well worth your time. Invest in yourself!
- We recommend visiting your family dentist every four to six months to have your teeth cleaned, have a fluoride treatment and to take x-rays if appropriate. It is important to keep your teeth clean and in good condition throughout your orthodontic treatment.
- We have implemented a grading system so you know how you are doing with your home care. Your assistant will give you feedback at each visit. Every time you earn an “Excellent” or “Good” grade, you will receive a punch on your reward card. These punches can be accumulated and redeemed for prizes. When a patient does not receive a “Good” or “Excellent”, we will communicate your progress. As always, you may ask questions at your appointment.
- A brushing station is available at all times.
Explanation of Hygiene Grading
- Excellent – Indicates a regular, thorough home care routine.
- Good – Indicates no food on the teeth, but some swelling on the gums, which requires consistent, thorough brushing and flossing to correct.
- Fair – Indicates possible damage to teeth and gums. Steps to improve hygiene are needed immediately.
- Poor – Indicates oral hygiene is inadequate and requires your undivided attention. A letter will be sent to your dentist to help ensure that the appropriate measures are taken.
